I am not the intended audience of this book。 Sort of。I suppose I am sort of the product of this book。 Sort of。 I know my parents read this book。 I know they took a lot from it。 And I certainly know it impacted many of the adults around me growing up。 Heck, I now work for a homeschool organization which traces its roots to the very radio broadcast Dr。 Dobson mentions。 It felt familiar。I think it contains lots of good content, for its audience。 There is a reason many of the top reviews of this boo I am not the intended audience of this book。 Sort of。I suppose I am sort of the product of this book。 Sort of。 I know my parents read this book。 I know they took a lot from it。 And I certainly know it impacted many of the adults around me growing up。 Heck, I now work for a homeschool organization which traces its roots to the very radio broadcast Dr。 Dobson mentions。 It felt familiar。I think it contains lots of good content, for its audience。 There is a reason many of the top reviews of this book are one-star。 If you aren't a conservative Christian, it will certainly take。。。more grace to read this one。 And if you are a conservative Christian, well。。。maybe also approach with grace。I don't love everything this book said。 I often cringed。 Sometimes I just plain disagreed with him。 He definitely wears rose-tinted glasses when he talks about the past。 And his reference to sexual identity feels dated in the face of what can be found today。 Some of his moral absolutes made me arch an eyebrow。 But。。。I'm glad I read it。 And I did write down a thought or two。 I can see why many conservative Christians found it impactful。The thing is, it already feels somewhat dated。 And while it doesn't take much to sift through to find the good advice, the longer time passes, the more sifting required。Curious (and trepidatious) to try Bringing Up Girls: Practical Advice And Encouragement For Those Shaping The Next Generation Of Women since my parents did not read that one。 。。。more

A little dry at times and leaning on the moralist edge from time to time, but always measured and orthodox。 The sort of thing every parent of boys should read。

Eludes review。 This is a cultural experience。 I laughed a lot and enjoyed it- but I think the author would be mad at me for that bc he is VERY serious。 If this is what the late 90s were like, I’m glad I was not there tho。 WOW it was bad。(Also for how many times he warns against impending beastiality in children if you are a single mother, the cover photo is a choice)

Similar to Boys Adrift, but with a Christian perspective as well。

It had some good suggestions, a lot of them were kind of obvious。 I read it when my kids were little and I think it was a good resource。

Every Christian parent of boys should read this! It is packed full of helpful information to raise Godly young men up in this sinful world。 Godly men our world desperately needs!

Al buen estilo del doctor Dobson, es un libro práctico con buenos consejos a tomar en cuenta en la crianza de nuestros hijos

I struggled with this book。 Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of good insight that I plan to take away & apply。 I found myself skimming or skipping entire chapters because the extremely conservative Christian & male dominant views on some of the topics do not align with my beliefs。

Insightful, encouraging, captivating - a must read for any parent raising a boy。 I will reread this throughout my parenting journey。 Very relevant even though it was written in 2001。

This book is a timely reminder to parents who are seeking the fundamentals of bringing up boys, such as the importance of being present and spending quality time。 Some of its opinion may not go well with feminists and liberalists and is also not very encouraging towards certain groups (such as single moms), but to be fair it was not intended to paint a bleak picture but rather to present a perspective that we should be aware of。

This is yet another great book by James Dobson。 Dr。 Dobson gives a great deal of insight as to why boys are as energetic and rambunctious as they are。 He gives great advice to fathers and mothers and suggestions for being an even greater help as boys mature into young men。 Dr。 Dobson warns against many of the cultural pressures facing boys today and the pitfalls to avoid。 I would highly recommend this book to any teacher, parent, or counselor。

I read over 50% of this book but I'm not going to finish it。 While Dr。 Dobson has the right heart and intentions behind his book, Bringing Up Books is in a desperate need of a rewrite。 Wording, statistics and examples need to be updated if he hopes to get his points across without sounding foolish and offending most people in 2020。 This book is no longer helpful to Christian parents looking to raise their boys in America。 I read over 50% of this book but I'm not going to finish it。 While Dr。 Dobson has the right heart and intentions behind his book, Bringing Up Books is in a desperate need of a rewrite。 Wording, statistics and examples need to be updated if he hopes to get his points across without sounding foolish and offending most people in 2020。 This book is no longer helpful to Christian parents looking to raise their boys in America。 。。。more

This is for a very specific audience。 The advice read outside of a specific branch of Christianity will sound abusive。 There is a lot of context required to understand what is being said。 If you read this book and want to implement the advice you need to make sure you have the context。 There are some things that can be learned from this, but on a whole it is too general in parts where it needs to be more specific or too specific when it needs to be more general。 I have quite a traditional view o This is for a very specific audience。 The advice read outside of a specific branch of Christianity will sound abusive。 There is a lot of context required to understand what is being said。 If you read this book and want to implement the advice you need to make sure you have the context。 There are some things that can be learned from this, but on a whole it is too general in parts where it needs to be more specific or too specific when it needs to be more general。 I have quite a traditional view of masculinity but the view expressed in this book is far too narrow。 I read this 4 years ago so I am not able to critique the point, but I will say that there may be some thing to think about, but I cannot say this is advice worth taking。 。。。more

This was a disappointing read。 Sure, the author has every right to frame everything from the point of view of his beliefs and religion, but the reader expects better from a person who is a PhD and expert in a space -- perhaps a more balanced view that does not ignore the studies and findings that go against his views informed by author's religion。 This was a disappointing read。 Sure, the author has every right to frame everything from the point of view of his beliefs and religion, but the reader expects better from a person who is a PhD and expert in a space -- perhaps a more balanced view that does not ignore the studies and findings that go against his views informed by author's religion。 。。。more

“Our objective as moms and dads is to transform our sons from “immature and flighty youngsters into honest, caring men who will be respectful of women, loyal and faithful in marriage, keepers of commitments, strong and decisive leaders, good workers, and men who are secure in their masculinity。 “ That can be achieved with wisdom and guidance from the Father。” Full of great information and advice in this book! Didn't finish。 As soon as it mentioned the "homosexual agenda" I knew this book did not align with my personal views。 A quick skimming through confirmed。 I hoped this book would be a resource for raising a good man。 Seems this book focuses more on the "boys will be boys" straight man mentality。 No thanks。 I want to raise a good person no matter what path he chooses in life。 Didn't finish。 As soon as it mentioned the "homosexual agenda" I knew this book did not align with my personal views。 A quick skimming through confirmed。 I hoped this book would be a resource for raising a good man。 Seems this book focuses more on the "boys will be boys" straight man mentality。 No thanks。 I want to raise a good person no matter what path he chooses in life。 。。。more

What a fantastic book for any parent with boys! This is the first book of Dr。 Dobson's that I've read, and it was exactly what I needed。 I have a toddler who is all boy, and I've found this book to be spot-on so far。 It provides helpful information on how to raise boys (yes, they are different than girls!) and goes into some detail about the various culture issues boys face in school and the world at large。 At time, this reality check is a bit scary--especially since boys have even more obstacles What a fantastic book for any parent with boys! This is the first book of Dr。 Dobson's that I've read, and it was exactly what I needed。 I have a toddler who is all boy, and I've found this book to be spot-on so far。 It provides helpful information on how to raise boys (yes, they are different than girls!) and goes into some detail about the various culture issues boys face in school and the world at large。 At time, this reality check is a bit scary--especially since boys have even more obstacles now than when the book was published in the 1990s。 However, the author continues to encourage the reader throughout the book and to point to God as the ultimate Father and Protector。 In a culture fraught with individualized truths, relative realities, anti-masculine messages, and perversions of every kind, it is our duty as parents to steer our kids in the way in which they should go。 I'm so thankful for this book and encourage any parent of boys to pick up a copy today。 (There is also a Bringing Up Girls book, which I'm sure is just as helpful。) 。。。more

I made it 2 hours into this 7 hour book and couldn’t continue。 There was no parenting advice in those first two hours; Dr。 Dobson spent the time talking about frivolous stereotypes between boys and girls: boys are better at math, girls are afraid to make decisions, boys want adventure and girls want to stay home and play house。 All not true in my case as a girl。 Then he moves on to shaming working moms and says their kids are more likely to die of a heart attack since they put them in daycare, a I made it 2 hours into this 7 hour book and couldn’t continue。 There was no parenting advice in those first two hours; Dr。 Dobson spent the time talking about frivolous stereotypes between boys and girls: boys are better at math, girls are afraid to make decisions, boys want adventure and girls want to stay home and play house。 All not true in my case as a girl。 Then he moves on to shaming working moms and says their kids are more likely to die of a heart attack since they put them in daycare, and that all mothers should stay home and not work outside the house。 Everything he said was ignorant and frustrating and I walked away with no new parenting advice。 。。。more

I believe this book may need an update。 While I think that Dr。 Dobson has experience as a psychiatrist and some good information on children, some of his views are anti feminist and at times homophobic as well。 I skipped/skimmed those parts。

A good one to skim。 Love Dobson but this one is filled with lots of common sense, quotes, and stories。

His views aren’t popular but they are backed by fact and the Bible。 I found this book inspiring and it made me want to be a better parent with practical how to’s。

I am a Christian, grew up in a Christian environment, went to a private Christian school。 Anyone who knows me knows I lean heavily toward Conservative than Liberal。 I have a lot of respect for Dr。 Dobson, yet this book disappointed me。 I felt like it was preaching intolerance, and encouraging parents to keep their little boys away from those "evil gay folks" - because otherwise, your child might end up just like them。 Yes, that's a blanket statement for the whole book, and yes, that was a bit of I am a Christian, grew up in a Christian environment, went to a private Christian school。 Anyone who knows me knows I lean heavily toward Conservative than Liberal。 I have a lot of respect for Dr。 Dobson, yet this book disappointed me。 I felt like it was preaching intolerance, and encouraging parents to keep their little boys away from those "evil gay folks" - because otherwise, your child might end up just like them。 Yes, that's a blanket statement for the whole book, and yes, that was a bit of sarcasm。 I couldn't finish this one。I for one, will not be teaching my little boy to be afraid of, hate or even to dislike anyone, due to sexual orientation or anything else for that matter, regardless of the source that tells me to do so。 This book is not representative of all Conservative Christians。 。。。more
